Apply for Engineering Registration Assessment

Start with the eligibility check. Confirming you meet the requirements and have the right documents before you apply is the single best way to avoid delays during assessment.

National Assessment Pathway

Find Your Assessment Pathway

RPEng is your national assessment pathway. RPEng gives engineers a recognised assessment pathway that can support registration applications across Australia. While each state and territory has its own registration rules, RPEng provides an assessment outcome that can be used as part of the pathway in jurisdictions where assessment is required before applying to the regulator.

One assessment, not multiple applications

Complete a single nationally recognised assessment instead of duplicating effort across different states and territories.

Nationally consistent standard

A unified benchmark recognised by regulators nationwide, giving employers and the public confidence in your credentials.

Easier interstate mobility

Move between jurisdictions with an assessment outcome that supports your registration application wherever you go.

Saves time, cost, and admin effort

Reduce paperwork, avoid redundant assessments, and get on with what you do best — engineering.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about engineering registration assessment in Australia.

Am I eligible to apply for an engineering assessment with Professionals Australia?
To be eligible, you must hold an appropriate engineering degree (ideally Washington Accord–accredited or supported by a Stage 1 Competency Assessment from Engineers Australia) and have at least four years’ post‑graduation experience plus a minimum total of five years’ engineering experience (pre‑graduation experience does not count). We strongly recommend completing the online Pre‑Application Readiness Check before you apply.
What documents do I need to prepare before submitting my application?
You will need a detailed CV demonstrating your experience against key Stage 2 competency elements (ethics, competent practice, safe and sustainable solutions, risk management, and discipline‑specific engineering knowledge), copies of your qualifications (and Stage 1 letter if applicable), evidence of at least 50 hours of CPD in the 12 months prior (for first‑time RPEng/RPEQ applicants), and details for three eligible engineering referees. Some documents, such as qualification copies, must be certified by an authorised witness (e.g. pharmacist or registered engineer)
What is the difference between RPEng, RPEQ and RPEV, and can I be assessed for more than one at once?
RPEng is Professionals Australia’s member‑based assessment scheme, while RPEQ and RPEV are statutory schemes used to apply for registration with the Board of Professional Engineers Queensland and the Victorian Business Licensing Authority respectively. PA offers dual assessments (RPEng + RPEQ or RPEng + RPEV) at no extra cost or time, but you currently cannot be dual assessed for both Victoria and Queensland together.
How long does the assessment process take and what can delay it?
Once you submit a complete application that meets all eligibility criteria, assessment typically takes 4–8 weeks. Timeframes are strongly influenced by documentation quality, completeness of CPD evidence, and how quickly assessors can contact you and your referees, so early applications with high‑quality evidence are encouraged.
What CPD and referee requirements apply to first‑time assessments?
First‑time applicants for RPEng/RPEQ must show 50 hours of eligible CPD in the 12 months immediately before submitting their application, using PA’s digital CPD log rather than external spreadsheets. You must also nominate three engineering referees (not architects or non‑engineering managers), with at least one who has directly overseen or signed off on your engineering work; referees are interviewed by phone or video, not email.
